Word to Markdown
Drop a .docx file and get clean Markdown with headings, lists, tables, links, and images intact. Your document never leaves your device.
How it works
Step 1
Drop a .docx file
Drag a Word document onto the left pane or click to choose one.
Step 2
Review the result
Compare the document preview with the Markdown output and touch it up if needed.
Step 3
Copy or download
Copy the Markdown or download it as a .md file.
Semantic conversion, not screen scraping
Word documents store structure — heading styles, list levels, tables — alongside their formatting. This converter reads that structure and maps it to the matching Markdown, so a Heading 2 becomes ##, a numbered list stays numbered, and tables become pipe tables.
Purely visual formatting such as fonts, colours, and page layout has no Markdown equivalent and is dropped. For best results, use Word’s built-in heading and list styles in the source document.
Frequently asked questions
Does it support old .doc files?
No. Open the file in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.
What happens to images?
With "Embed images" on, images are included inline as data URIs, so the Markdown is self-contained. Turn it off to drop images.
Why does a heading come out as bold text?
The source probably used bold formatting instead of a Heading style. Apply Word heading styles for proper # headings.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The file is read and converted entirely in your browser.
