Markdown Formatter & Linter
Clean up messy Markdown with Prettier, find style problems with markdownlint, and auto-fix what can be fixed — without installing anything.
How it works
Step 1
Paste Markdown
Paste a document or drop a .md file into the input pane.
Step 2
Format or fix
Choose Prettier formatting for a consistent style, or auto-fix only the lint issues markdownlint can repair.
Step 3
Review and copy
Read the lint report under the editor, then copy or download the cleaned-up Markdown.
Two tools, one page
Prettier is an opinionated formatter: it normalizes list markers, emphasis, spacing, and table alignment so every file looks the same. markdownlint is a linter: it reports rules such as skipped heading levels, missing blank lines around lists, or trailing spaces, many of which it can fix automatically.
Use Prettier when you want a consistent house style, and the auto-fix mode when you want minimal changes that only address the reported problems.
Frequently asked questions
Which rules does the linter check?
The default markdownlint rule set (MD001–MD059), covering headings, lists, whitespace, code blocks, links, and more. Each issue shows its rule ID and line number.
Will formatting change how my Markdown renders?
Prettier only changes source style — markers, spacing, and alignment — not the rendered meaning. Check the Preview tab to confirm.
Can it wrap long lines?
Yes. Set Wrap to "Wrap at width" and choose a line width, or "Unwrap paragraphs" to join wrapped lines.
Is my content sent to a server?
No. Prettier and markdownlint run locally in your browser, loaded the first time you use this page.
