Markdown TOC Generator

Paste a Markdown document and get a linked table of contents whose anchors match GitHub's heading IDs exactly — ready for READMEs, docs, and wikis.

How it works

Step 1

Paste your Markdown

Drop a .md file or paste a document that uses # headings.

Step 2

Choose levels and style

Pick which heading levels to include and whether the list is bulleted or numbered.

Step 3

Copy the TOC

Copy just the table of contents, or tick "Insert into document" to get the whole file back with the TOC in place.

Anchors that actually work

A table of contents is only useful if its links land on the right heading. This tool slugs headings with the same algorithm GitHub uses — lowercasing, removing punctuation, and adding -1, -2 suffixes to repeated headings — so every link works when the file is viewed on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Will the links work on GitHub?

Yes. Anchors are generated with github-slugger, the same slugging rules GitHub applies to rendered Markdown headings.

What about duplicate heading names?

Repeated headings get -1, -2, and so on appended, matching GitHub, so each TOC entry links to the right section.

Does it update automatically?

The generated TOC is plain Markdown. Re-run it after editing headings, or use the Insert TOC button in the full editor.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser.
